Reviving Totoro: A Unique Retail Space by Hao Fan and Longhui Lee

Embracing the Charm of Totoro in a Modern Retail Environment

Inspired by the beloved Japanese film "Totoro", designers Hao Fan and Longhui Lee have created a unique retail space that resonates with both children and adults. The design, full of rural pastoral freshness, offers a warm and natural sensory experience while showcasing different rhythms and breaking away from the existing framework.

The design of the GaBe Totoro retail space is a testament to the creative prowess of Hao Fan and Longhui Lee. Drawing from the charm of the classic Japanese animated film "Totoro", the designers have created a space that is both engaging and functional. The space is segmented into boxes of different sizes, representing the elasticity of space use. The design can serve as a stage for sharing, a field for rest, or a space for literary creation.

The main materials used in the realization of this design include antique bricks, a large number of log finishes, steel plates, and square pipes from modern industry. These materials, combined with the use of rough colors, provide a warm and natural sensory experience. The project covers a total of 230 square meters, with each region carrying its main tasks and specific functions according to its spatial characteristics.

The design team, which also included Kunxiao Lu and Qiuxin MaLing, faced the challenge of implanting a layered relationship in the original spatial pattern of square and transparent space to shape different functional fields. Through the analysis of spatial level, the segmentation of sheets, and the series of sheet structures, they successfully connected the spaces and created a smooth rhythm.

The GaBe Totoro retail space started in August 2018 in Kunming and was completed in November 2018. The design team conducted rigorous checks on the overall design plan and the landing construction of the project. They also engaged in extensive material selection and comparison to ensure the perfect rendering of the effect map. Through collaboration and discussions, the design scheme was well executed and received high praise from the owner team.

This unique retail space was awarded Silver in A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2019. The award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation. The GaBe Totoro retail space, with its strong technical characteristics and splendid artistic skill, truly embodies these qualities.
